The ‘ego’ or personality is, as you can imagine, an essential part of our make-up. Without it we simply couldn’t function effectively in society.
When we talk of the ego we tend to think of somebody being ‘big-headed’ and thinking that they are ‘better’ than others. Of course there are people who behave that way, yet sometimes the opposite can be true.
The ego creates illusion – it doesn’t like us to change our ways or habits – so as we develop and discover new things about ourselves the ego may also tell us that we’re not good enough – it doesn’t matter what for, it could be absolutely anything from starting a training course or a new job to simply being loved.
This can block our capacity for learning and creativity as we can think that we’re not clever/strong/good enough (you can substitute your own words) – for anything.
The result is that we stay ‘safe’, not taking chances or opportunities because “I’ll probably fail anyway”. We can then kid ourselves that “it’s for the best” – yet how can we know that unless we try?
So ponder this: the next time that voice in your head says: “you can’t do this, you’re not good enough” – ask yourself: is that really true?
Chances are, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised!
